Other carmakers supply cars for one-marque races, but none with the prestige of the Challenge. Buying a used race car can be a very tricky proposition. Nearly every one has been hit at some point or another, expensive mechanical upkeep is put off, cosmetics get neglected...it"s all part of racing. There"s a significant premium placed on either winning cars or unused ones, for obviously different reasons. This car, operated by Ferrari itself in conjunction with the Challenge series, saw duty as the pace car for the series, provided parade laps for VIP"s and sat as a display piece the public could get close to in order to see what the car was all about. Sent out sporadically with the series, it was retired to storage a couple of years ago. Its one and only owner, already a multiple Ferrari owner, heard whispers that the car could be for sale earlier this spring. He doesn"t race wheel-to-wheel, preferring the adrenalin rush of track days to satisfy his craving for speed. Like any junkie, though, he found ways to tweak the car a little. $8,000 worth of steel brake rotors and new pads replace the tricky carbon ceramic setup (no worries--the original brakes come with the car,) a second set of $11,000 factory Challenge wheels come on the side, the original (also included) side mirrors were removed in favor of longer and lighter carbon fiber racing pieces, and a one-off carbon fiber wing with quick release pins similar to the series wing was fabricated. On that last piece, Ferrari had different aero packages for different tracks, but since this car was never truly driven in anger it never got its wing! If you"re in doubt about the car"s cosmetic condition, simply look it over. The body, all original under the Motorola wrap, is clean from head to tail--no dents, no dings, no excuses. A bare car is no way to display a race car, and Ferrari re-did the wraps more than once to keep current. Inside, the seats were fading as racing seat cloth is prone to do, and were just recovered in the proper material. Think about that: A four-figure bill was paid because the seats were a little less red than new! Mechanically, the car is solid as a rock. Maintenance was religiously performed by Ferrari, of course! North Coast Exotics, our local Ferrari repair shop, replaced the rear hubs and uprights, went through the entire car mechanicially and gave its stamp of approval. The car went out for one more track day, was returned to North Coast for a full fluid service, and the owner traded the car to us. It is 100% ready to go, down to fresh gas in the fuel cell. Safety is another obvious concern, and the past owner took that to heart. He had the fire suppression system evacuated and recharged, and replaced both harnesses with brand new OMP units.
