Description
Evoking the mythological creature of indigenous populations of North America, the Ford Thunderbird began life in February 1953 in direct response to Chevrolet's new sports car, the Corvette. However, the T-Bird was not pitched as a competitor, rather a "personal luxury car" that ended up performing in unison. The first 1955 model of the first generation (1955-1957) hit show rooms in late 1954 and was instant sensation, outselling the Corvette 23 to one in 1955. Like the Corvette, the Thunderbird had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time, such as single, circular headlamps and tail lamps and modest tailfins, the Thunderbird was sleeker and more athletic in shape, and had features like a faux hood scoop and a 150 mph speedometer hinting a higher performance nature that other Fords didn't possess. Mechanically though, the Thunderbird could trace its roots to other mainstream Fords. This '56 T-Bird houses the standard 292 cu in Y-block V8 from Ford's Mercury division and has a 3-speed manual transmission with RWD. The dedication to outmatching the Corvette's class is apparent in this T-Bird's luxurious features such as power windows, power locks and power seats not to mention the convertible hard and soft tops. Another classy feature added in 1956 was moving the spare tire to a continental-style rear bumper in order to make more storage room in the trunk. Don't pass up on this iconic Ford Thunderbird with the most flare in its class. She drives great is real head turner at the weekend cottage or car shows. Call or e-mail for more information.
