1955 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Chassis No. 5500946 This unique Mercedes-Benz 190SL, Fire Engine Red with white leather interior, is a three owner car. This car was the show car for Mercedes Benz in 1955 in Mexico City hence the specialized interior color as well as the upgrades that include a mirror on the drivers side fender and eyebrow moldings, etc. It was originally purchased in March, 1956 by Miguel Arabi of Mexico for approximately $1,995.42 (US dollars). It currently has only 44,010 miles (70,985 kilometers) -- very low miles for a 1955 car! Mr. Arabi sold the car in 1964 to Miguel Aboumrad, also of Mexico. In June, 1996 the car was purchased by Jose Antonio Fernandez who had it completely restored; cosmetically and mechanically by Andre Horvath. The ground-up restoration included paintwork, mechanical and electrical work. New carburetors were tuned by Will Samples of Dallas, Texas. In addition, Will Samples also completed the steering box and transmission. The engine was completed by Metric Motors of Canoga Park, California and the seats were done by Bruce L. Adams. The instruments were completed by North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock Company. It comes with the optional removable hardtop and third-passenger traverse seat. It has been extensively detailed to concours quality and is ready for leisurely driving and touring. A prototype was first shown at the 1954 New York Auto Show. The 190SL was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, which it closely resembled both in its styling, engineering, detailing and fully independent suspension, both cars having double wishbone suspensions at the front and swing axles at the rear. However, the 190SL did not use the 300SLs purpose-built tubular spaceframe W198 platform, but was built on a shortened monocoque R121 platform that was modified from the W121 small saloon. The 190SL was powered by a new, slightly oversquare 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine (Type M121 BII), that developed 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) (or 120 gross hp) that earned itself a reputation for not running that smoothlymostly due to the difficulty in properly synchronising the twin-choke dual Solex carburetors, and that, in detuned form, was later also used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models. The four cylinder engine block of the 190SL was based on the six cylinder engine of the 300 SL. The 85 mm bore was transferred unchanged from the larger engine to the smaller, although the stroke for the 190 SL was reduced from 88.0 mm to 83.6 mm.
