Amazing Speedline wheels New StopTech brakes New H&R springs You know how a simple-sounding project can snowball? This car is a case study: We dropped the engine to fix a couple minor oil leaks and the next thing you know it has a rebuilt turbo, a fresh valve job with all new guides, new head studs, a full service, new brakes and a plethora of NOS parts on it. We like to say we sell the nicest, cleanest and best performing cars on the market, and this car proves our dedication. When the car came in, it ran great but had a minor miss and was leaking oil out of the cam chain box seals. No big deal--this is the fourth car we"ve repaired for just such issues. When we removed the intake piping, we could see that the turbo has tried (and, fortunately failed) to eat a fastener of some sort. Whoever dropped it in thankfully removed it immediately, but not before the compressor wheel vanes were deformed. As a precaution, we ran a leakdown test and found two cylinders weren"t sealing thanks to out-of-spec exhaust valve guides--the cylinders were perfect. We sent all six heads to Gellner Engineering here in Cleveland, as we know they"re capable and experienced with 911 engines. They replaced all 12 guides, performed a full valve job, declared the valve stems to be in great shape, and installed new seals. At the same time, we spoke with Charlie at Evergreen Turbo in Florida, another well-known builder in Porsche circles. We sent him the turbo, which he declared good other than the bent fins--no damage existed at all past the inlet. He rebuilt it with a new BAE compressor wheel, a 360 degree thrust bearing upgrade kit, and a coated exhaust housing. We can"t say enough about his work--the turbo came back looking better than NOS! While the heads were out, we started tearing into a "91 3.3 turbo motor for similar oil leaks. We pulled the valve covers and found a broken head stud. That made us pause, and since we already had the 3.6 down to the engine case, a full set of ARP head studs, nuts and washers went on. Overkill? Maybe, but we wanted to make sure there wouldn"t be a problem in the future! With the motor apart, we turned our attention to detailing. The bottom of the car and the motor and transmission were dry ice blasted. That"s a process usually reserved for restoration--it"s gentile enough to clean wallpaper but tough enough to remove dirt, grime and ancient Cosmoline. It"s almost a miracle process...it leaves metal spotlessly clean but doesn"t remove the factory crayon and marker lettering from the assembly line workers! After the heads went back on (with new head and cylinder base gaskets) we started painstakingly refitting the valvetrain. The rockers were adjusted as they were installed, and we replaced ALL of the cam seals, front and rear. The power steering pump and turbo scavenge pump went back on, and new cog belts for the power steering and air pump followed. New Beru multi-tip spark plugs went into their bores, and a new Beru cap and rotor went on the distributor. The turbo oil feed line had some stress cracks so a new one from the dealer went in. The intake went down after a thorough cleaning, including the injectors. New front main and intermediate shaft seals take their places in the rear while new breather housing and oil sending unit seals are up top. New Porsche belts turn the fan and A/C compressor; a new Porsche fuel filter is on your left. New filters are in the air cleaner and air pump housings. Brad Penn 20W50 is in the crankcase, while Valvoline 80W90 is in the gearbox. The engine sheetmetal went into the bead blaster for a thorough cleaning before getting multiple coats of heat resistant paint. We"ve noticed that the turbo cooks the paint directly above it, and we"ve shielded that area with DEI heat resistant matting. We replaced the grommets for the wastegate lines and breather tubes before reinstalling the tins with factory hardware. The clean B&B exhaust was treated to a fresh polish and reinstalled. You get full heat, faster spool up and a deep and aggressive tone...it"s perfect for this car. The motor was back together, but we weren"t done. The engine sound pad was just bad enough to be replaced, the hood struts weren"t up to the task and we removed the suspension for further work. About the only item dry ice blasting destroys are the front strut jounce bumpers--they"re foam and past their service lives. We installed new Porsche bumpers AND dust boots. We also dropped the car to Euro ride height with a new set of H&R springs--it looks like it should have when it was new! With the struts out, we detailed the calipers, resurfaced the original rotors and installed new StopTech pads at all four corners. We also dry ice blasted the wheelwells while it was apart--again, we went about as far as you can go on this car! We"ve posted hundreds of pictures of the restoration under the "projects" tab. All original panels and paint flow from one end to the other. The original Speedline wheels sparkle, looking amazing in front of the big red brakes. The glass and trim are excellent. The doors and decklids close with German precision--this is a no accident, no excuse car. Inside, the original seats are supple and clean. The rest of the interior is stock down to the Porsche radio in the dash. Clean carpets, fully functional accessories and a ton of power--the 964 turbo is truly a leap ahead in driving comfort. We"ve gone over the car THOROUGHLY and are convinced you simply won"t find another Turbo 3.6 as nice and as well sorted as this car. It"s over the top at the very least. As a static piece in a collection it"s a standout. As a driver, you literally need to do nothing but put fuel in the tank--its maintenance is completely up to date. If you"re looking for the best, this is it, bar none. At the Motor Car Group, we"re enthusiasts first. We want you to enjoy your new car from the minute it"s delivered and the trailer door drops. Before a car leaves our shop, it"s gone through comprehensively, both visually and mechanically. We do more than just kick the tires, though: We fill your tires with nitrogen, road test (if the weather permits us here in Cleveland!) and clean it inside and out. We buff the paint using a three-step process immediately before it"s taken away so that it gleams when it arrives.
